about
The oldest recorded spider lived to be 43 before being killed by a parasitic wasp. In 2013 a French professor in the US died at age 83 after months of sleeping under the desk of her university office and working a second job at a fast food chain. Trapdoor Spiders is a song about being robbed of a dignified exit.
lyrics
Number 16 died with a parasite in her chest
Cut down in a second
by some unwelcome guest
Yeah it’s a shame but they reckon in
that neck of the woods it’s all OH&S
You spend your life spinning webs
but you never get a safety net
Number 16 steered through 43 years
with a trapdoor over her head
Just shy of the weather and the apex predators
keeping tabs on her health
But the sky still falls And Centrelink calls
with more automated debt
You keep four feet in your burrow
and four feet in the precipice
Setting records for simply breathing
As if it’s gonna pay off
More than a life observed and dissected
by pundits and representatives
Keeping everything packed at hand just
in case you gotta get out
No more advice or censure from strangers
Unsolicited uninvited
Number 16 dreamed of the scales tipping over
and the clocks all getting reset
No more probes or drones or signposts
No more threats of a blowfly deficit
But history insists she justify existing
cos the boys all lost their heads
And now the jury’s out on what rights the parasite gets
Number 16 swore she must’ve missed the memo
When the price of admission was set
Maybe her invite never cleared customs
Maybe her vibe was just too venomous
Maybe they plotted her end on the dark web
sad little men with their bad vibrations
Maybe they pounced in the daylight hours
Everyday trapdoors everyday spiders
Up ahead I see you waving
As if you know a way out
over the sunburnt wheat belt
No seatbelt
No chance of shaking free cos
There’s a whitetail under the dashboard
A Redback in the sink
there’s a huntsman hanging on the architrave
Keeping eight eyes on everything

It's a truly unique sound that gets under your skin, and the vocals are just incredibly hard hitting and raw, it's literally addictive, I love it! budgetp
